What to Expect During Your Newborn Photos Session in Oklahoma City

After months (and sometimes years) of hoping, planning, and waiting, your baby is finally here. And if you’re anything like I was after welcoming my two rainbow babies, you might be feeling equal parts joy, exhaustion, and awe. When families start planning newborn photos, one of the first questions they ask is simple: What will the newborn session actually be like?

As a former PICU nurse and Oklahoma City newborn photographer, I’ve spent years working with babies and families during some of the most emotional seasons of life. That experience shapes how I approach every one of my newborn photo sessions. My focus is always on safety, patience, and creating a calm environment where your baby and you can relax.

Newborn sessions in my studio are intentionally slow-paced and centered around your baby’s needs. If your little one needs to eat, be held, or simply take a moment to settle, we pause. There’s no rush and no pressure, just time to capture this new chapter for your family.

Parents are often relieved to hear that the studio itself is designed with their comfort in mind, too. There’s a cozy space to sit and breathe for a minute, snacks and drinks available, and everything needed for diaper changes close by. Many moms also appreciate having access to my client closet and the option to include professional hair and makeup so they can feel confident stepping in front of the camera.

Let me walk you through how the entire experience works, from the moment you reach out to the day your artwork arrives.

Starting the Process: Planning Your Photo Session for Newborn Portraits

The very first step is simply reaching out and starting a conversation. I love getting to hear a little about your family, your pregnancy, and what you’re hoping these newborn photos will capture.

Once we talk through the experience and make sure it feels like the right fit, we reserve a spot on my calendar around your due date. I only reserve a few newborn due dates a month, so it’s important to reach out as soon as possible.

Most families plan their photo session for newborn portraits during the first couple of weeks after birth because babies are typically sleepier and more comfortable being gently posed. That said, flexibility is always important during this stage of life. Recovery, feeding schedules, and baby’s personality all play a role.

If you’re trying to figure out the timing, you may find it helpful to read my guide on when to take newborn photos in Oklahoma City as you plan.

Preparing for Your Newborn Photo Shoot

One of the things you often hear is how overwhelming those early weeks can feel. Getting ready for a newborn photo shoot shouldn’t add stress to that season, you should feel supported.

Before your session, I’ll send helpful information to guide you through everything from what to wear for the whole family to how the session typically flows. I’ll also introduce you to the wardrobe options available in my studio. Many moms love having beautiful, comfortable dresses available, especially when they’re still navigating postpartum recovery.

Your session isn’t just about baby, either. Parents and siblings are always part of the experience. These images become even more meaningful when the people who love your baby most are included.

Scheduling Your Newborn Photos

Once baby arrives (yayy!!), you’ll reach out to me to officially get scheduled. We’ll usually schedule your newborn photo session within the first 7-14 days, but we are accommodating to our families when it comes to scheduling time frame. I know first-hand how crazy this season of life can be.

I will arrange hair and makeup for you with our hair and makeup team. That takes one more thing off your plate and adds even more for you to look forward to when we capture your newborn photos.

How Your Newborn Photo Session Will Go

When you arrive at the studio, my goal is for everything to feel relaxed from the start. I know how much effort it can take to leave the house with a brand new baby, so once you’re here, you can simply settle in while I take care of the rest, including, prepping, steaming, and ironing the wardrobe to get it ready to go.

During your newborn photo sessions, the pace is gentle and flexible. Mom will be pampered by our hair and make-up team while I start working on the baby only portion.

Some babies fall asleep quickly, while others prefer a little extra time to get comfortable. Either way is completely normal. My role is to guide the session in a way that feels natural for your family.

I’ll carefully position your baby with their comfort and safety always in mind. My background in pediatric nursing plays a big role in how I handle and pose newborns during each newborn photo. Everything is done slowly, with close attention to baby’s cues and needs.

Once Mom is done hair and makeup, we’ll transition smoothly over to the family portion of the session. If there are older siblings we’ll have Dad or a relative bring the older siblings closer to the family portion of the session.

The Newborn Session Experience

The studio has many amenities to make your session relaxed and comfortable, such as a fully stocked beverage fridge, snacks, games for littles, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney plus.

The studio is located in Wheeler district. So not only are we close to a playground, there are also coffee and lunch options close by including American Gothic, Taco Nation, and Clarity Coffee.

You’ll also notice that the styling in my studio tends to be simple and timeless. Instead of busy setups, I focus on soft textures, gentle colors, and subtle newborn photo props that keep the attention on your baby and your connection as a family.

The result is a gallery that feels classic and meaningful, not trendy or overly staged.

Seeing Your Newborn Photos for the First Time

One of my favorite parts of the entire experience happens shortly after your session. About a week or two later, families return to the studio to watch a slideshow of their beautiful gallery.

This moment can be surprisingly emotional. Seeing your baby’s newborn birth photos, the quiet moments with your partner, and the tiny details you were too tired to notice in real time often brings everything rushing back.

During this appointment, I’ll help guide you through selecting the images that mean the most to you. Many families choose to create a custom newborn photo album or design wall artwork for their home. We mockup to scale gallery walls with custom hand crafted museum grade framed artwork and build a fully customized heirloom album.

Once the artwork arrives, we provide complimentary installation for the gallery walls. Just one less thing for you to worry about and one way we can make it easier for you to showcase artwork that is crafted specifically to your style and space.

The Final Step: Bringing Your Newborn Photos Home

Once your selections are finalized, I begin working with professional printers to create your finished artwork. This part of the process is handled carefully because these pieces are meant to last for years, even generations.

Most print products are ready within about four to six weeks, and framed artwork can even be installed for you. Your digital newborn photos are also delivered through a secure online gallery. This makes it easy to download and share with family.

It’s always such a full-circle moment when families finally hold their finished images.

Why These Fleeting Moments Matter So Much

My path into photography was shaped by experiences long before I opened my studio. Working in pediatric nursing taught me how precious time with our children truly is. My own journey to motherhood and the years it took to get there only deepened that understanding.

And there’s one memory that has stayed with me through it all.

When I was a child, I spent an afternoon taking photos with my grandmother using her new camera. We laughed, experimented, and captured a simple day together. Not long after, we lost her unexpectedly. Those photographs became something my family still treasures.

That’s why I care so deeply about what I do.

Your newborn photo shoot isn’t just about documenting your baby’s first days. It’s about preserving a piece of your family’s story while it’s still unfolding.
